The Nintendo 64 was released in 1996, and went onto sell over 32 million units worldwide. The N64 offered vastly superior graphics to the Super Nintendo and spawned successful games including Super Mario 64 and Golden Eye. Unfortunately for Nintendo, the competing Sony Playstation
sold over 100 million units and totally eclipsed the N64's success. The much publicised decision by Nintendo to stay with cartridges instead of CD's
(assuming gamers would not put up with CD loading times) is now one of the most blamed factors for the comparative lack of sales.
However, the N64 is still considered a moderate success and many people consider it to be one of the finest consoles ever produced. There are currently over
2500 N64 roms available for download.
