The Nintendo Gameboy was originally released in 1989 and went on to achieve huge success, selling nearly 70 million units of the mono-screen versions and a further 49 million units of the later color version (released in 1998). Combined with the 80 million units sold of the Gamebody Advance, this makes the Gameboy series easily the most popular handheld consoles ever. Despite the technically superior Atari Lynx and Sega Game Gear systems, the original Nintendo Gameboy was much more popular due to being small, light, inexpensive, durable and able to play a large library of popular games.
