The SNK Neo Geo CD was released not long after the standard cartridge based SNK Neo Geo. Based on the same processing hardware, the SNK Neo Geo CD made use of CD's mainly to reduce manufacturing and thus resale costs. SNK Neo Geo CD games were a fraction of the cost of their cartridge equivalents, and consequently many games were produced on both types of media. However, the console could not compete with the 3D power of the Sony Playstation and Sega Saturn and this, combined with the systems long load times and limited marketing, consigned the SNK Neo Geo CD to failure.
